Comparing laying methods

Different methods mean different aesthetics and different material quantities.

Straight

The simplest and cheapest. Minimal waste. A +10% allowance is enough.

Offset

The classic staggered-brick effect. The cut-off piece is used in the next row. A +10–12% allowance.

Diagonal 45°

An elegant look. Makes the room appear wider. A +15–20% allowance is recommended.

Herringbone

A luxurious zigzag pattern. A +15–20% allowance is recommended.

Frequently asked questions about flooring

Answers to the most common questions about laying and calculating flooring

How is the element quantity calculated?

For straight laying: (room length ÷ (element length + grout line)) × (room width ÷ (element width + grout line)). Every row that ends in a cut piece is counted as an extra element. Diagonal and herringbone laying use more complex algorithms.

How does the "natural" offset work for laminate?

Laying starts with a full plank. The cut-off piece at the end of the room is carried over to the start of the next row – saving material. If the leftover piece is under 200 mm, it's discarded and the new row starts with a full plank. This is the most economical and natural method.

Why do Diagonal and Herringbone need more material?

Diagonal laying needs cuts at the corners, while herringbone requires a complex pattern where changes in direction produce many small offcuts. A 15–20% allowance is recommended.

What's the difference between the offset percentages?

50% – the classic "brick bond" effect, very popular. 33% – more subtle, often used for long, narrow planks. 25% – minimal offset. All percentage-based methods carry the cut-off piece over to the next row neatly, so the difference in waste is minimal.

What's the principle behind herringbone laying?

Each tile or plank is laid perpendicular to its neighbour, forming a V-shaped (herringbone) pattern. It's recommended that the element's length be at least 2× its width (e.g. 150×300 mm or 200×1200 mm).
