How the expense split works

For every expense, the calculator credits the person who paid and assigns a share to each selected participant. It then nets all expenses across the group. A positive balance is money to receive; a negative balance is money to pay.

The settlement plan works from those final balances, so a payment may go to someone who did not directly cover that person’s receipt. This is intentional: offsetting debts reduces unnecessary back-and-forth while preserving exactly what everyone owes.

Penny-perfect rounding and exact amounts

All calculations use whole pennies. If £10 cannot be divided evenly between three people, the shares are £3.34, £3.33 and £3.33, so no penny disappears. Equal remainders are assigned consistently in participant order.

For restaurant bills or purchases where people ordered different items, choose Exact amounts. The entered shares must equal the original expense exactly before the calculator will save it.

Private group records and backups

The group stays in this browser and is not sent to calcy.eu. Each language and currency has a separate saved list, so opening another market version cannot mix pounds with euros, złoty or lei.

Download the JSON backup if you want to restore the editable group or move it to another device. The CSV is a spreadsheet report. Completed bank transfers are not recorded as expenses; adding them would count money twice.

How do I find out who owes whom?
Add the people and expenses, choose who paid and who shared each cost. The calculator compares what each person paid with their assigned share and produces the payments needed to settle the group.
Can an expense be shared by only some people?
Yes. Select only the people involved in that dinner, taxi, ticket or purchase. The payer does not have to be one of them.
How are pennies rounded?
Amounts are allocated in whole pennies. The calculator rounds down first and distributes any remaining pennies by the largest fractional remainder, so the shares always equal the original expense.
Can I split a bill unevenly?
Yes. Choose Exact amounts and enter the amount belonging to each selected person. The entries must add up to the expense total.
Why might I pay someone who did not pay for me directly?
The plan settles net group balances rather than each receipt separately. Indirect debts are offset, while every person still pays or receives exactly their final balance.
Are completed repayments tracked?
No. This page produces a settlement plan. Do not add repayments as new expenses because that would increase the group total a second time.
Where is my group saved?
Only in this browser on this device. Clearing site data or closing a private session may remove it, so download a JSON backup if the group matters.
Can I change currency or language?
Each market page uses its local currency and stores a separate group. Amounts are not converted when you open another language, and backups in a different currency are rejected.
Is there a limit?
You can add up to 50 people and 1,000 expenses. One expense can be between £0.01 and £100,000.00.
